Easy Panel Fun: Checkerboard Border Design
Click here to Print Pattern Quilt size 38" x 58" Created by Joy-Lynn Cole © Yardage Requirements: 1 panel 1/2 yard for adjusting inner border 5 fat quarters for pieced border Additional fat quarters will give you a scrappier look If you are planning a larger quilt with additional borders (patterns attached) you will need approximately 8 fat quarters for the second border and approximately 8 fat quarters for the third border. The first border is an adjusting border. After straightening the center panel, cut border strips so the quilt will measure 26 1/2 x 46 1/2". Simply measure your squared up center panel, subtract your measurements from 26 1/2 x 46 1/2", divide by 2 and add 1/2" to each measurement. The answer will give you your required strip measurements for the adjusting obrder, including your seam allowance. Please see the example. After adding your adjusting border to your panel, measure the length and width, which should measure 26 1/2 x 46 1/2". You are now ready to add the second border. Cutting directions for the pieced border 4 each 6 1/2" corner squares 27-30 each 2 1/2" strips from fat quarters. You should get 7, 2 1/2" strips per fat quarter. Use a big selection for a scrappier look. The second border is strip pieced. Cut your fabric in 2 1/2" strips. Sew 3 strips together, pressing all seams in the same direction. Cut this new strip of 3 in 2 1/2" sections. See diagram, segments should measure 6 1/2 x 2 1/2". Mix up sections and begin sewing together, flipping one so the seams will interlock. Piece 2 border segment using 13 sections each for the top and bottom. Piece 2 border segments using 23 sections each for the sides. Sew corner square to top and bottom sections. Pin at corners. Sew intersection so corner points will match.
